Why are we having an oil crisis now?

I was taught at my school that this wouldn't happen until 2040 or the very least 2030. Why are the gas prices so high now and why is the country heading for depression. There must have been something I missed because I don't know what's causing all this?

And if all of this is happening now, what will it be like in 2030 or in the next 50 years and so?Why are we having an oil crisis now?
Again, there is no oil supply crisis, we aren't runnign out of oil, or anything like that.

Watch the news. We aren't even in a recession yet, nevertheless near a depression. The housing bubble burst, combined, with a credit crunch, and high oil prices (due to a long-time in balance of refining capabilities and demand) is being corrected.

Oil is only expensive because of speculators. Why are we having an oil crisis now?
When wt says watch the news, he means Fox News. The right wing is denying that there's any problem. Everything's just great. Riiiiight.

One reason for the oil problems is that huge countries like India and China are consuming far more oil than ever before, and their need will continue to grow as those countries progress. The U.S. used to be able to get all the oil it wanted, and we were real hogs about it.

This is a matter of supply and demand, and there are political complications in the Middle East that contribute as well.

I'm wondering why they taught you those particular years in school. What was that based on?

Steve, you sound rather paranoid. Another Fox News viewer, I take it. Who, exactly, is creating this situation to ';help'; Obama? Do you remember how gas prices miraculously dropped prior to the 2006 Congressional and Senate races in an effort by the Republicans to keep control of both houses? It didn't work, but it's interesting how they got the prices down when they wanted to. I guess that's why you think someone's manupulating them now.

Edit: Devdog, I agree. This is what we get for having an oilman in the White House. The only answer is alternative fuel sources. Looking for more oil is like giving a junkie more heroin. You don't solve his problem; you just continue to feed it.
The critics will tell you that its do to increase in demand. Both China and India have greatly increased their demand for oil but this is not why we have a oil crisis.....heres why. Bush has created a false economy that is now imploding upon itself and causing the dollar to become weak. The Saudi's are simply demanding that we make up the difference in the weak American dollar by charging us the difference of a weak dollar .....

Heres how Bush created a false economy.

1. Tax cuts for the reach was created to give big business the incentive not to go over seas.....it was smart move but still dumb because the real answer was to add on a tax penalty for big business going over seas...why not...they have the tax cut incentive...why leave. Without the penalty to stop them, too many big business's went over seas, taking with them, countless good middle class jobs.

2. Bush damaged the middle class which is the backbone of the U.S economy and always has been. Why give the tax break to the rich. The rich took the money Bush gave them and added on to their business's. That means hundreds of thousands of 7 to 9 nine dollar a hour dead end jobs. Such a vast creation of low paying jobs circumvented the economy because the income brought in by these jobs cannot buy homes, cars, start business's and invest in big business....which turns the economy.

3. Because Bush is a big Oilman himself, he really has no interest in creating alternative fuels, which cements our dependency upon oil. Everytime the oil prices go up, Bush gets a bonus check because his stocks go up. Therefore, we forget that solar and nuclear fuel as well as other sources of fuel actually work if we would just invest the money.....
Nope this is all artificial trying to get Obama elected, it is not going to work.
